Wyoming plans events for Gay Rights Week; Shepard trial begins
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Events in honor of Gay Rights Week are coincidentally timed with the trial of two men charged with murdering Matthew Shepard, organizers said.
Jury selection is slated to begin Wednesday for Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney, both 21, of Laramie, who are charged with the fatal beating of Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student.
Meanwhile, Gay Rights Week is expected to be honored across the country emphasize gay and lesbian rights and preach tolerance. The events are intended to make schools and public places safe for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or race, organizers said.
Prayer vigils, marches and other events are planned in Casper, Cheyenne, Lander, Jackson and Laramie.
Local events coordinator Lynn Griebel said she hopes to show that equality begins in the Equality state.
The events are sponsored by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
